Every second EV owner we meet in Metro Vancouver has heard "there's a rebate," nobody's quite sure how it works, and half of them missed it because they installed first and asked later. This is the short version we wish someone had handed us five years ago.
The two rebate programs that actually matter
There are two live rebates in BC as of Q1 2026, and they stack:
- CleanBC Better Homes Rebate — up to $350 off a Level 2 charger install.
- BC Hydro EV Ready Rebate — up to $1,000 for single-family homes to make the panel EV-ready if an upgrade is required.
The one thing to get right: order of operations
The rebate rules are strict about the sequence — miss it and the claim is denied.
- Book a pre-installation site visit from a licensed contractor. This is where load calculations happen.
- Apply for CleanBC pre-approval before the electrician starts pulling wire.
- Install the charger. Keep the serial number, model, and a photo of the finished install.
- File the claim within 6 months of the invoice date.
The number-one rebate mistake we see: homeowner installs, then applies. CleanBC requires the application before work starts. Retroactive claims are almost always rejected.
